Mrs. Baker is Dead, You've Received Her Inheritance - Aug. 17, 2002

The producers of Mrs. Bakerare excited to announce that the film has been renamed. The new title is Inheritance. There were several grounds for the name change said director Kris Kristensen, "It started because there was some confusion with the name itself. We showed a rough cut to several friends and during the feedback the main character was frequently referred to as Mrs. Brown as opposed to Mrs. Baker." Because there already is a film titled Mrs. Brown (1997) starring Judi Dench, the producers wanted to avoid any future confusion.

"More importantly though, thematically Inheritance is a much stronger title," continued Kristensen. "By the end of the film Abbey has either inherited Mrs. Baker's spirit or her family's history of mental illness."

The producer's also felt that the title created a stronger mental picture than Mrs. Baker. "I've always liked the title Mrs. Baker, but I was worried that when people heard the title they might get the wrong idea. This is a supernatural thriller and I didn't want anyone thinking that it was a movie about a sweet, little old lady that baked cookies. I was particularly concerned taht if people had no reference to the film and they just saw the title either in the paper or on a marque, that Mrs. Baker might not encourage them to check it out on impulse, whereas Inheritance might pique their interest."

Kristensen concluded, "At least where there's an inheritance, there's a corpse, and when there's a corpse there's always a promise of drama... and that's what I hope our potential audience is thinking when they hear the new title."
