| Scotopia Helps Sky Captain land in Seattle - 8/26/04 A private screening of Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow will take place in Seattle in conjunction with the Science Fiction Museum. The evening will be exclusive to members of either the Science Fiction Museum. Sky Captain writer and director Kerry Conran will be in attendance for a Q&A after the screening, moderated by Scotopia Pictures' founder Kris Kristensen.
On a recent trip to Southern California Kristensen was treated to about 20 minutes of Sky Captain and a tour of the World of Tomorrow headquarters. "Every where I looked, we were surrounded by breathtaking imagery, whether it was a rough thumbnail sketch, a detailed production design illustration, or a nearly completed shot on a computer screen. The beauty and detail of this film is stunning." Kristensen had seen Conran's original 6 minute Sky Captain demo which he had made in his living room almost a decade ago. "At the time I was stunned, not just by the fact that Kerry had created this world in his living room and computer, but it looked like it had been made by a seasoned filmmaker. I knew that what I was looking at was one day gonna be huge." "The method that Kerry used to shoot this film is revolutionary. He's taken George Lucas one step further by creating everything that the actors don't interact with directly on a computer." Kristensen read the script for Sky Captain a few months ago, and thoroughly enjoyed it. "It's got great characters, a charming romance, gripping action, and thrillride of a plot. Then when I saw actual footage last month, I got even more excited. This film is so well crafted, by someone who has complete command and love of the genre." To all the skeptics that are concerned that this film is only going to be an effects extravaganza, "Kerry uses CGIs as a tool, and not as a crutch. After the initial awe of the look of the film, you get completely sucked into the characters and story. You also forget that none of these sets actually exist. There's a scene when Gwyneth Paltrow enters the lobby of Radio City Music Hall, and unless you're thinking about it while you're watching... you completely believe that the film was shot on location." Kristensen is excited to introduce Conran and Sky Captain to Seattle, "The audience is going to be treated to a revolutionary technique of filmmaking, but more importantly they are going to experience a truly great film. I predict that Sky Captain is going to be the true heir to Indiana Jones."
