Reality Check - 3/23/10

For almost the past half year director Kris Kristensen has been working in reality TV as a writer. "Sure, writing reality sounds odd, but think of it more as editing," explains Kristensen.

As one of the primary writers on Season 2 of A&E's hit reality show HOARDERS Kristensen would receive approximately 40 hours of footage to sift through in order to find 20 minutes of story, before then handing the material over to an editor to put the finishing touches on the work. "This is probably the most difficult job that I've ever had," he states. "It's not exactly like looking for a needle in a haystack, but it's kinda like putting a puzzle together without having a photo to use as a guide." The quick turnaround schedule makes the work even more complex in that you are writing from one act to the next, without the advantage of seeing the big picture and knowing how it all turns out in the end.

His work on HOARDERS was impressive enough to land him a job as a writer with the BIOGRAPHY channel for an upcoming episode on the origins of MARRIED... WITH CHILDREN. "This job was like taking candy from a baby compared to HOARDERS, in that each act was well laid out before I ever had to write a single word. Not so say that it didn't evolve and change as I got deeper into the research, but the end goal was always clear."

"The best part of doing the BIOGRAPHY episode was that the story behind MARRIED... WITH CHILDREN is really compelling. I'd never seen a single episode of the show, but watched some during my research and found it to be a very funny show. Way more clever and sophisticated than I'd ever imagined."

The episode will air later this year.
