The 20/20 Awards - 3/24/10

How did you do in this year's Oscar pool? How did you do 20 years ago? What did you think of this year's Oscar winners? How do you think this year's winners will withstand the test of time?

If you've ever asked yourself any of the above questions then there's a pretty good chance that you'll want to check out The 20/20 Awards. The 20/20 Awards have set out to "correct" the Academy Awards through twenty years of hindsight.

Kris Kristensen has has alway been baffled how people's favorite films of all time are frequently the very last few films they've seen. This is also why the Oscars have never really made sense to him because you don't have enough perspective to truly look back within one year and recognize what was the best. This concept was expressed to Korby Sears over a drunken exchange at a bar, and four months later the duo had created the The 20/20 Awards.

One day Kristensen's friend Rich Phelps pointed out a blurb where Matt Damon, of all people, said he felt the Oscars should be held 10 years after the fact so that the voters would have a little more perspective on the films. The co-founders of the 20/20s decided that 10 years still wasn't enough perspective to decide what would really sustain itself, so they opted 20 years instead. They simultaneously came up with the name, because it's 20 years later, and then the factor of having 20/20 hindsight.

They scrambled to put together a voting body, threw together a website, and made some goofy awards (The Felix - If the winner of the original Oscar repeats and also wins the 20/20 Award it's known as an Odd Couple).

Kristensen says "This is our inaugural year, and we plan to do this annually, so it's not like we just wanted to challenge the films of 1989, but ironically it was somewhat of a groundbreaking year for film in that it ushered in a large number of highly touted filmmakers; Spike Lee (DO THE RIGHT THING), Steven Soderbergh (sex, lies, and videotape), and Gus Van Sant (DRUGSTORE COWBOY), so maybe it's a sign that we're about to do something groundbreaking as well."

The voting body (THE SYNDICATE) is currently made up of 45 working film professionals from all over the globe, including several members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. To qualify, a member must have credit in the main titles of a feature film that received some form of distribution (not including self distribution).

Some interesting facts:

This year, none of the original 5 films nominated for best picture in 1990 was nominated for best picture in 2010, and that includes a tie for the fifth slot. Even with 6 films vying for best picture this year, none of the original 5 made it back.

This years best picture selection are CINEMA PARADISO, CRIMES AND MISDEMEANORS, DO THE RIGHT THING, DRUGSTORE COWBOY, JESUS OF MONTREAL and WHEN HARRY MET SALLY. The only criteria is that a film must have had theatrical distribution in the year that we are nominating (in this case 1989).

Of the 5 screenplays nominated in 1990, for best ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY; four of them returned in 2010. The one that didn't return... DEAD POET'S SOCIETY which was the script that won the Oscar in 1990. It was replaced with HEATHERS by our voting body (known only as THE SYNDICATE).

Of the 5 scripts nominated in 1990 for best ADAPTED SCREENPLAY; four of them returned in 2010. DRUGSTORE COWBOY replaced ENEMIES A LOVE STORY.

The only category where the nominees were 100% replicated from 20 years ago was Best Visual Effects; THE ABYSS, THE ADVENTURES OF BARON MUNCHAUSEN, and BACK TO THE FUTURE II.

The major awards went to:
Best Picture - CRIMES AND MISDEMEANORS
